A man has been arrested over the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a car which failed to stop, police have said.

Merseyside Police said a man was found lying on Moss Bank Road, near the Moss Bank Hotel, in St Helens at about 00:30 GMT and pronounced dead at the scene.

A force spokeswoman said the man, who has not yet been identified, was hit by a blue Mazda which then drove away.

A 51-year-old man from St Helens has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Appealing for information, Sgt Steve Smith said the investigation was "in its early stages and... we are still examining footage and are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time".

"If you were driving in the Washway Lane, Moss Bank Road and Scafell Road area... or were in the vicinity of the Moss Bank Hotel at this time and have any dashcam or CCTV footage, please review it and get in touch," he added.

"Any information, however small it may seem, could prove vital as we seek to understand exactly what happened."
