A woman shot dead in her home in Merseyside was the victim of a targeted attack, police have said.

The body of the woman, aged in her 50s, was found by officers at the house in Meadowbrook Road, Moreton, in the early hours of Sunday.

Merseyside Police said it was keeping an "open mind" on any motive.

A man, 79, who was known to the victim, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and has since been released under investigation.

Detectives said they were interested in tracing the movements of a dark coloured vehicle, carrying up to three people, seen in the area at the time.

A vehicle was later found burnt out, a short distance away on Garden Hey Road, and officers believe it could be "one and the same".

Det Ch Insp Sue Coombs said: "This isn't a random attack - as far as we're aware, it's a targeted attack, but of course we're keeping our mind open as to the motivation of the attack."

She added that the force was not yet able to confirm whether the shooting took place inside or outside the house.

Ms Coombs appealed for information about the vehicle and its occupants and urged people with dashcam and CCTV footage to come forward.
