A teenager has been injured in a shooting at a park in Liverpool.

The boy was was seen with injuries to his arm and leg in a bush after several shots were reportedly fired at Wavertree's Botanic Gardens at about 18:30 BST on Friday, police said.

A group of youths then fled the park while the victim ran to a property in Parton Street. He was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Police appealed for anyone with details or footage to contact them.

Communities and authorities in Merseyside have been trying to tackle gun and knife crime after a number of high-profile shootings in recent years, including the killing of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel and the Christmas Eve killing of Elle Edwards.

Det Ch Insp Caff Cummings said they "fully understand the fears and tragedies gun crime has caused in our communities in the last year".

"To fire a gun in a public place is reckless and callous and officers are working to remove such individuals from our streets and put them behind bars."
