A mother and her baby have been rescued after they got stuck in mud on a beach.

The pair were spotted by passers-by on Crosby beach on Merseyside just before 13:00 BST, who alerted local lifeguards.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue said it "assisted the individuals to shoreside safety" before paramedics assessed them. No injuries were reported.

The beach is known for its soft mud, gullies and incoming tides, with visitors urged to take precautions.

An RNLI spokeswoman said: "If you are planning to visit Crosby beach, the RNLI advice is to stay within 50m (150ft) of the promenade and don't attempt to enter the water if red flags are flying.

"If you see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the coastguard."
