Homes were evacuated after two grenades were found at a house following an arson attack.

Two men, dressed in black, broke into a house before setting fire to it on Parkview Road, Croxteth, Liverpool at about 22:40 GMT on Sunday, police said.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service put out the fire before they found the grenades, one inside and one outside.

The bomb disposal team removed the devices to safely detonate them in a secluded area on Lower Lane.

No injuries were reported in what police said was a "targeted attack".

'Totally reckless'

Police said at about 01:00 "a number of homes" were evacuated "as a precaution" and a cordon was in place from Parkview Road to Willow Way and Helford Road.

Residents were allowed to return at about 09:00.

Officers have asked anyone with information to contact them.

Ch Insp Nathan Stockley said: "We are in the early stages of investigating this incident that has caused significant damage to a house in Croxteth.

"This was a totally reckless thing to do and is wholly unacceptable where the lives of residents were put in serious danger.

"I would like to reassure those who were evacuated that we are working to find those responsible."
