More than 100 new student places could be created at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) Sixth Form College.

A three storey extension is planned for the performing arts and music college on Upper Duke Street in the city making room for 110 more students.

A planning application has been sent to Liverpool City Council after government funding was secured.

LIPA was founded by Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney in 1996.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said funds had been made available for the site to grow after a successful bid to the Department of Education.

The expansion would include seven new practice rooms and a live music area.

A design and access statement said: "The scheme seeks to accommodate an additional 110 learners as an extension to the existing building and as part of the overall LIPA campus on Upper Duke Street Liverpool."

A date has yet to be confirmed for the plans to be considered by the council's planning department.
