Four men have been extradited from France over a "large disturbance" in Liverpool which left four other men injured, police have said.
Merseyside Police said four men suffered wounds near a nightclub on Victoria Street on 27 December.
It said a 21-year-old was in a critical but stable condition in hospital, while the others were recovering at home.
The four extradited men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and violent disorder.
Officers were alerted to the attack after they found the 21-year-old with stab wounds to his chest at the junction of Church Street and Whitechapel at about 05:30 GMT on 27 December.
A force representative said a second man self-presented at hospital with a stab wound to his back, while two others suffered head lacerations which were "believed to have been caused by being hit with a bottle or glass".
They said it was believed two groups of men had come together after leaving The Safehouse nightclub.
They said three 21-year-olds, from Wavertree, Huyton and Dovecot, and a 20-year-old from Everton were "detained by French authorities in Calais" on Tuesday and had "now been extradited to Merseyside Police".
Appealing for witnesses, they added that the men were "now in custody, where they will be questioned".
