A man has been shot in the face in an attack at a house, police have said.

Merseyside Police said officers found the injured man at a property on Derbyshire Hill Road, St Helens, at about 11:55 GMT on Monday.

The force said the man, who is in his 30s, was taken to hospital and remained in a "serious but stable condition".

Appealing for witnesses, Ch Insp Tom Welch said a "complex" investigation had begun as officers tried to establish what happened.

"I would appeal to anyone who lives in the area that has any information or who has doorbell camera footage that may have captured the incident to get in touch as soon as possible," he said.

He added that officers were remaining "in the surrounding area of Derbyshire Hill Road" to carry out house-to-house inquiries and provide reassurance.
