A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a jogger was hit by a van.

The man, yet to be identified, was critically injured after being struck in Norris Green, Liverpool on Sunday.

Merseyside Police have shared a picture of a yellow cap in the appeal to find out who the jogger, in his 50s, is.

A man, 25, of Liverpool, and a woman, 44, of Kirkby, are being questioned in custody.

Det Sgt Jason Higham said the jogger was in a critical condition, adding: "So it is crucial that we identify him and let his family know as soon as possible.

"We suspect the man was out exercising at the time of the collision and we hope his neighbours, family or friends will recognise him due to the sports clothing he was wearing."

Police said the bald, clean-shaven jogger is white, and was wearing a black Karrimor long-sleeved jacket with a bright yellow Karrimor cap.

He was out running with black gloves and black New Balance trainers with green stripes on the side, when he was struck on Utting Avenue East at about 18:30 GMT.

Police appealed for any witnesses and urged anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage which could help the inquiry to come forward.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

The silver transit van was later found parked up at the junction of Hollingbourne Place and Hollingbourne Road in Norris Green, the force said.
