A firm has been given a £900,000 contract to develop a site with "one of the best views in the world".

Wirral Council approved the deal with builders John Sisk and Sons as part of plans for Birkenhead waterfront, which looks onto Liverpool's famous skyline.

The authority also amended the expected number of homes to be built near Woodside Ferry Terminal to 594 by 2040, compared to the planned 630 units.

It is part of £21m plans to regenerate 400m (0.2 miles) of waterfront.

The project is partly financed by the government's Town Deal and levelling up funds, some of which needs to be spent by March 2025.

A public consultation recently ended on Labour-led Wirral Council's masterplan for the area, which includes proposals for hotels, commercial spaces and cultural attractions.

The £21m budget could increase by £3m if funding from Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is formally approved.

Wirral Council's plan describes the area as "one of the best development sites on the Wirral, if not Merseyside," adding: "This is Brooklyn to the New York skyline - the great place to live with an amazing view, but so much more."
