Petition to keep Tornados at RAF Marham reaches 10,000

The House of Commons has been told a petition to retain the Tornado base at RAF Marham in West Norfolk has been signed by 10,000 people.

The government's strategic defence and security review is likely to lead to the number of RAF Tornado bases reducing from two to one.

This may lead to the closure of either RAF Marham in Norfolk or RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland.

South West Norfolk Tory MP Elizabeth Truss started the petition on Saturday.

Within minutes of the launch in Swaffham a large queue had formed of people wanting to sign the petition.

Ms Truss told MPs: "Since the launch of the Make it Marham campaign last week we have achieved over 10,000 signatures in Norfolk to ask the Prime Minister to make sure that the base of the Tornados continues at RAF Marham where it is most economically effective."

Ms Truss plans to present the petition to David Cameron on 30 November.
