London's Calling: Norfolk band The Colour pen 'Olympic anthem'

The Colour, a five-piece band from Norfolk, are aiming for musical gold with London's Calling, an "Olympic anthem" in honour of the 2012 Games.

Drummer Scott Field, 39, said: "We wanted to do something big and bold for the Olympics, it's really snowballing."

Norwich City Council are discussing a live performance of the track during theOlympic torch's overnight partyin Chapelfield Gardens on 4 July.

Lead singer James Poole said London's Calling is "a party vibe anthem".

Mr Poole, 24, grew up near Great Yarmouth, but now lives in London. Having noticed an apathy towards the Games, he hopes London's Calling will be a call to arms for the nation.

He said: "It's the biggest event in the world and we're lucky enough to host it this year. London's Calling is about getting everyone on board.

"There's still a lot of mixed feelings about the Olympics, especially in London. Not everyone's entirely convinced, but it could be the biggest show of our time - so hopefully the song represents the opportunity of the Games."

'Drummatic art'

The band are called The Colour because of the performance art created at their live gigs.

Drummer Scott Field plays with hollowed sticks linked to bags of paint - when he plays, the paint flies on to a blank canvas.

Mr Field came came up with the idea in 2004. He said: "It was a 'eureka' moment while coming back from a visit to the Tate Gallery.

"We're not just a band that plays music, the 'drummatic' art also creates a visual arts performance - it's an exciting thing for people to see being performed on stage.

"We've taken the chance to create a patriotic, stand together, kind of song. London's calling everyone from other countries to join in this mass celebration.

"Reaction to the track is surreal. I was expecting some interest, but nothing on this scale. To go from nothing and into the limelight is more than we could ever have imagined."

The band is currently in negotiations with organisers at the Olympic Park to perform London's Calling during events at the Games.

The Colour also includes guitarist Adam North, from Long Stratton, bass guitarist Rob Forder, from East Harling, and keyboard player and guitarist Alex Jones, from Watton.

The video for the song was shot at a disused warehouse in Cambridge at the beginning of March and features dancers from the Cambridge Performing Arts College.
