People are being warned to keep out of the water after blue-green algae was confirmed to be present in parts of the Norfolk Broads.

The algae - cyanobacteria - has been found at South Walsham Broad and Barton Broad, the Broads Authority said.

Blooms of blue-green algae can be toxic, external to humans and animals.

The authority asked people to be vigilant as it was "highly likely that there will be additional blooms" in other areas of the Broads.

On its Facebook site, external, the authority wrote: "Please ensure that you stay out of the water and keep children and dogs under control in the area.

"Blooms of blue-green algae can threaten public health as well as the health of dogs, cattle, fish and other wildlife.

"It poses a particular risk to dogs and it can be fatal in some circumstances."
