The Arc Cinema on Marine Parade will be open for free Christmas Day screenings

A cinema will open its doors on Christmas Day to welcome people who were lonely or struggling with bills.

The Arc Cinema on Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth, held an open Christmas in 2022 and said it was a huge success.

Visitors were welcomed with popcorn and soft drinks and were shown a festive favourite on the silver screen.

The company said it wanted to repeat the gesture because of the reaction it received last year and anticipated a growth in demand.

Arc Cinema general manager Derren Hodges said it was a good thing to do for the community.

Derren Hodges, the cinema's general manager, said the cost of living crisis has pushed many people to their limits.

"It's apparent that the cost of living is hitting people and there are people in our town struggling for food, electricity and are even scared to put their heating on," he said.

"We hope we can offer warmth, food, treats and a festive Christmassy experience.

"It's not just for the homeless or those feeling alone at Christmas, but anyone who feels they needs a bit of extra Christmas cheer."

Free of charge

Mr Hodges said that the food was being provided in partnership with GY Net, which made food hampers.

Anyone who wanted to go along does not need to book, and no payment is required.

Mr Hodges added: "Last year we welcomed around 70 people, mostly families.

"I expect we will be welcoming more this year and will probably run two films in two screens.

"It's a nice thing to be able to do, but it's sad that it's needed."

Doors open at 17:00GMT for the buffet, which is invite-only through GY Net, with the feature films showing at 18:00GMT.
