Deal will see 82 homes built on Great Yarmouth brownfield site

A deal between a council and two housing associations will see 82 homes developed on a brownfield site.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council (GYBC), in Norfolk, bought out leases from businesses on The Conge, and demolished the site this year.

The redevelopment of the gateway route, from the railway station to the market place, has been funded by the government's Future High Streets Fund.

A consultation event will be held at Great Yarmouth Town Hall on Wednesday.

Broadland Housing and Orwell Housing said they would work together over the next five years and the first project would focus on 82 new homes.

GYBC said the deal would increase the number of new homes and the speed at which they can be built.

The development would consist of one and two bedroom flats, and two and three bedroom houses, with some being low-cost rent and others being low-cost ownership or rent-to-buy.

Subject to planning approval, work on the first 32 homes could begin next year.

The council said it looked forward to working with the housing associations "to deliver significant regeneration".

In a joint statement Andrew Savage, Broadland's executive director development, and Greg Dodds, Orwell's assistant director of development and growth, said: ''Orwell and Broadland are both locally based and have a long track record of providing quality homes for rent and sale across Norfolk and Suffolk.

''The strategic partnership with Great Yarmouth Borough Council is an exciting opportunity to work in collaboration over the coming years to support delivery of new homes across the borough.

"Orwell and Broadland are delighted to bring forward this iconic site in the centre of Great Yarmouth as the first project under the partnership. The application at The Conge will help to transform a brownfield site into high-quality, well-designed and attractive housing which will provide much-needed affordable accommodation in the town centre."

The consultation is available online, with a public event between 11am and 4pm at Great Yarmouth Town Hall on Wednesday 17 April. The online consultation closes on Friday 19 April.
