Wellingborough to cut 80 jobs to save £3m from budget

A council is to shed a quarter of its workforce of just over 300 people in a bid to save £3m from its budget.

Conservative dominated Wellingborough Borough Council is to cut 80 jobs and despite 30 volunteers already, is not ruling out compulsory redundancies.

Economic development and events organisation are the areas hardest hit, council leader John Bailey said.

The council's Labour party leader Sashi Dholakia said front-line services to vulnerable people were under threat.

Mr Bailey said that statutory services would be protected but all others provided by the council were under scrutiny.

Mr Dholakia said cuts to customer services would hit council tax payers as it would become more difficult to contact the council.

"Closure of neighbourhood services would hit vulnerable people and cuts to environmental services would hit hygiene law enforcement."
