Northampton's Greyfriars Bus Station to be knocked down

The main bus station in Northampton is to be relocated to another part of the town.

Greyfriars Bus Station will be knocked down and a new interchange will be built on the former indoor fish market on Sheep Street.

Councillor Tim Hadland, responsible for regeneration, said: "This moves the transport hub closer to the centre of the retail section of Northampton."

Designers are currently drawing up plans for the new building.

"We would expect to see something concrete to show people in the next two or three months," said Mr Hadland.

The fish market is currently being used by Northampton's art collective which will have to find new premises. The group moved into the building six year ago.

John Simpson, general manager of the Northampton Arts Group, said: "It was a shock when the news came but we fully understand and support the county council's position."

The borough council also said that the relocation would allow the proposed expansion of the Grosvenor shopping centre to get a step closer.
