£250m plans to expand Northampton's Grosvenor Centre

A £250m scheme for the expansion of Northampton's Grosvenor Centre has been submitted to planners.

Legal and General Properties (LGP) wants to extend its site to the north, which would cover the existing Greyfriars Bus Station.

It also plans to build new streets and malls which will feed into the Grosvenor Centre.

The company submitted the plans to the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC).

LGP said it wants to build a 11,000 sq metres department store, as well as shops and restaurants covering 40,000 sq metres.

Northampton Borough Council agreed to knock down Greyfriars Bus Station for the extension of the Grosvenor Centre in 2009.

Councillor Tim Hadland, Northampton Borough Council's cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: "This demonstrates a real commitment to the Grosvenor Centre development, which will see hundreds of millions of pounds being invested in our town centre."

A full planning application is expected to be submitted in the autumn.
