Plan to 'remodel' A5/A45 junction

Improvement work planned for a busy junction in Northamptonshire would help the growth of Daventry, the district council has said.

Up to £950,000 will be spent on remodelling the A5 and A45 crossroads in the nearby village of Weedon.

Work would include extending the carriageway, adding extra lanes and installing new traffic lights.

Chris Miller, from Daventry District Council, said the work was necessary for the prosperity of the area.

'Further growth'

He said: "This is going to enable further growth in Daventry, which is important in terms of our regeneration plans, for long term employment and building new housing.

"We had a public enquiry a few years ago and the planning inspector told us that we would have to expand this junction to support further growth in the area."

The money is part of the government's Growing Places Fund, which is designed to realise the nation's ambition for housing, economic growth and job creation.

It was allocated to the project by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership.

This is the first project to receive funding from a pot of £5.9m given to Northamptonshire in 2011.

Northamptonshire County Council said work would start on the junction in the next five months.
