Work has started on a new £10m specialist technical college in the south of Northamptonshire.

The University Technical College (UTC) in Daventry will provide education for up to 600 14-19-year-olds.

Pupils will learn about new technologies in engineering, construction and environmental sustainability and get work experience.

It is expected that the college will take in its first pupils in 2013.

The new college, sponsored by local businesses, Moulton College and the University of Northampton, has been paid for using government money.

Peter Bates, from Shepherd Construction, who will build the facility, said the college would be built to the highest environmental standards "using sustainable materials".

Both of the UTCs in Daventry and Silverstone are part of 13 colleges announced across England.
