Corby council's 'financial dealings subject to police probe'

Financial dealings by Corby Borough Council are under investigation by Northamptonshire Police.

The BBC understands a former council worker has been interviewed in recent weeks.

It comes after Conservative councillors handed the "suspicious" findings of an audit report to police, in July 2013.

Police said their inquiry, with which the council explained it was co-operating "fully", was to establish whether a crime had been committed.

The audit report examined four major projects, including the Corby Cube, the cost of which went from £35m to £47m.

How the cost of the Cube project was allowed to spiral, was one of the questions raised in the report by auditors KPMG.

The Corby Cube houses council offices, a library, theatre and a register office.

The other three projects involved the Tesco store, a housing development on Kingswood estate and improvements to Rockingham Triangle sports complex.

A Northamptonshire Police spokeswoman said: "We have received an allegation involving Corby Borough Council and are making enquiries to establish if any crime has been committed."

Chief executive of Corby Borough Council, Norman Stronach, said: "We are fully co-operating with Northamptonshire Police in order to help them with their enquiries."
