Armed robbery at jewellers caught on film

Five men wearing masks and armed with sledgehammers, axes and machetes have ram-raided a town centre jewellers.

Emergency services were called to Michael Jones Jeweller at the Gold Street/Bridge Street junction in Northampton at about 10:40 GMT.

Northamptonshire Police said a car was driven into the shop and the men threatened staff with weapons.

The men drove off with stolen jewellery in a silver Hyundai which was abandoned half a mile away in Auctioneers Way.

Det Insp Johnny Campbell said: "This incident was extremely distressing for staff in the store who we are determined to get justice for by catching these criminals.

"I would urge anyone with any photos or video footage to contact us on 101 so we can arrange a time convenient to them for us to visit and collect this evidence."

A police spokeswoman said: "There is traffic congestion in the area and the incident is ongoing."

The jewellers has been approached for comment.
