Northamptonshire Police said four people had been taken to hospital after apparently injecting themselves with heroin

A warning has been issued about a dangerous batch of heroin after four people became ill in a town.

One woman went into cardiac arrest in Northampton town centre and three others were taken to hospital.

Northamptonshire Police said using heroin from this batch "could have fatal consequences".

The force added that it did not condone drug use but it was important to warn addicts about the risks of taking this drug.

The woman was found in cardiac arrest in the town centre at about11:00 GMT on Friday.

Three other people had already been taken to hospital on the same morning with similar symptoms.

Northamptonshire Police said all four were thought to have injected themselves with what they believed to be heroin before suffering medical episodes.

Det Insp Tony Kennedy said: "Whilst we would never advocate anyone taking illegal drugs, the fact is that there are people in this county with drug addictions, and we want to warn them about a potentially lethal substance that may be in the drugs they are taking."

He added: "If you are a drug user, please be mindful of buying heroin in Northampton, or indeed across the rest of the county, as this particular batch could have fatal consequences."

Anyone with any information, or concerns about drugs in their community, is urged to call police officers on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
