New £9m Victoria Leisure Centre opens

A Nottingham leisure centre, which has undergone a £9m improvement scheme, has opened to the public.

Work to modernise the 100-year-old Victoria Leisure Centre began in 2010.

New facilities include a six-lane, 25m swimming pool, a fully equipped gym and a separate children's splash area.

Hundreds marched through Nottingham to protest against the possible closure of the building and some original features have been incorporated into the design.

Victoria Leisure Centre was on a list of centres facing possible closure after Nottingham City Council said the facility was too expensive to run and "past its best".

Part of the centre, the Danielle Beccan Suite, has been dedicated to the memory of the Nottingham teenager who was the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting in 2004.

Standing next to the leisure centre is the revamped Sneinton Market, which has had a £6.8m transformation.

It is hoped the space will be used for public performances, markets and festivals and is part of the city council's plan to regenerate the area.
