Newark and Sherwood council seeks buyers for Kelham Hall

The council said it wanted to be sure the hall was preserved for future generations

A Nottinghamshire council is to seek "expressions of interest" in buying its historic headquarters.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has been housed in Grade I listed Kelham Hall since 1974.

But officials said the authority needed less space and maintenance costs on the building were rising.

Potential buyers are being asked to outline what they would do with the building and how much they would be willing to pay for it.

The sale was first suggested in 2010, when the council had said it had to make £7m in savings over three years.

At the time, it was estimated moving headquarters would save about £450,000 each year.

David Lloyd, cabinet member for Property and Finance, said: "The council has been considering options about the future of Kelham Hall for a while and has now decided to actively market it to see what interest there is.

"This is not a formal tender process however. Expressions of interest will allow councillors to take an informed decision on what happens to Kelham Hall and how its history can be preserved appropriately for generations to come."
