Nottinghamshire storm: Properties flooded and roads closed

Heavy rain caused flooding in many areas of the county, including Gunthorpe

Properties have been flooded and roads closed across Nottinghamshire after heavy rain from a severe storm.

Cars were abandoned in flood water in Hucknall, north of Nottingham and properties in villages in the county were damaged by flooding.

Long Lane, in Hucknall, and the villages of Lowdham, Colston Bassett, Woodborough and Lambley were some of the areas affected by the heavy rain.

Five flood warnings are in place across Nottinghamshire.

Race meetings at Southwell Racecourse on Monday and Tuesday have been abandoned due to waterlogging.

Alan Walters, flood risk manager for Nottinghamshire at the Environment Agency, said: "Some areas are very treacherous at the moment so we would advise the public to be very careful.

"There is a lot of surface water on the roads and... it is not a good idea to be on the roads unless it is absolutely necessary."

On Sunday flash flooding shut roads in the county, including parts of the A52, A46 and A60.

Woodborough resident Sue Walker said: "It was pretty horrible - filthy water and debris flowing down the main street.

"Lots of people were out and lots of defences outside houses but most people have managed to stop water getting into their homes… most people have taken precautions and put barriers up and put sandbags out."

One man had to be rescued after getting stuck in mud in a field at Carlton-in-Lindrick near Worksop.
