A section of a major Nottinghamshire road is to be replaced after it was hit by subsidence linked to a nearby mine.

An eight-mile (12.8km) stretch of the A614 between Ollerton and the A1 was closed on Monday after a 50ft (16m) crack was discovered in one section.

UK Coal confirmed the problem was associated with mining at nearby Thoresby colliery.

The company said it had been monitoring movement in the area and hoped to reopen the road in time for Easter.

A spokesman for UK Coal said: "The ground settling is caused by work some 750 ft (229 metres) below and we have been working closely with the county council in assessing the issue.

"The crack is not wide but it is about 50ft (16m) long and as all of the road will have to be rebuilt it will take a number of days."

Motorists travelling south are now advised to follow the diversions via A57, B6034 and A616 before rejoining the A614.
