Death of inmate at 'dangerous' HMP Nottingham confirmed

Nottingham Prison is just north of the city centre and holds about 1,060 inmates

Another prisoner has died at a jail described by inspectors as "dangerous", the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has confirmed.

Ben Ireson, 31, died at HMP Nottingham on 13 December and the circumstances of his death will now be examined by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

It comes after two prisoners died in two days last month.

The prison has already been heavily criticised in a report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons earlier this year.

Deaths at HMP Nottingham

Eight inmates caused their own deaths at the prison between February 2016 and January 2018

• Eight prisoners killed themselves in the two-year period between inspections in February 2016 and January 2018, and a ninth prisoner is believed to have killed himself a few weeks after the latest inspection

• In January, HMP Nottingham was the first prison to be referred to the Secretary of State for Justice under the urgent notification process

• The government has since published an action plan to improve the prison

• The Chief Inspector of Prisons, Peter Clarke, described the suicide rate at Nottingham as "tragic and appalling" in a report published in March

• In July, inmate Ferencz-Rudolf Pusok, 28, was charged with murder following the death of fellow prisoner, 43-year-old Brett Lowe

• Robert Frejus, 29, was pronounced dead at the prison on 9 October after being found within his cell looking face down

• Wyndham Thomas, 41, died on 6 November after being found hanging by a ligature in a shower block at the prison

• George McCallum, 79, died a day later

• Mr Ireson's death on 13 December will now be investigated by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman
