A man has been arrested following a stand-off at a coffee shop in Nottingham city centre.

Police were called to the Costa shop off Friar Lane at about 12:20 GMT, with eyewitnesses reporting an argument involving a man holding a young child.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said a 35-year-old man was spoken to by police negotiators and arrested on suspicion of assault at about 17:15.

He said the unharmed two-year-old was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A number of nearby roads that were closed as part of a police cordon have since reopened.

The BBC's Neil Heath said a huge crowd formed outside the cordon during the dispute.

Describing the man inside, he said: "He is talking to about five officers with other officers further back. The man is talking calmly.

"It is clear a negotiation is going on to release the child. The child doesn't seem distressed. Paramedics are outside."
