Footage of children playing on live rail tracks 'hugely shocking'

CCTV footage of children playing on a live railway line has been released.

The video, which was taken at Bingham railway station in Nottinghamshire, shows a child retrieving a shoe that had been thrown on to the tracks by his friend.

The "deeply worrying" footage has been released by East Midlands Railway (EMR).

The company said 50 trains passed through the station each day with some travelling at speeds of up to 60mph (96.5km/h).

The CCTV footage was recorded last month but was released by EMR on Wednesday.

"These scenes are deeply worrying and clearly show that local kids in Bingham still don't understand how dangerous it is to trespass on to railway tracks," Lucy Gallacher, emergency planning manager at EMR, said.

"We are urging parents and guardians in the town to make sure their children know that playing on or near railway tracks can result in tragic and life-changing consequences."

Joe Rowberry, head of safety, health and environment for Network Rail's East Midlands route, added: "Footage like this is hugely shocking and while our railway is one of the safest in the world, it is vital people understand the dangers because too many lives are being put at risk through their own actions."
