A nine-year-old cancer survivor has turned on the festive lights in a Nottinghamshire village after a "tough" year in which his family feared he may not see another Christmas.

Aydn was picked to switch on Calverton's lights on Friday in tribute to his "strength and bravery".

Last Christmas Aydn was in hospital being treated for bone cancer, while battling sepsis.

At the switch-on, Liam, Aydn's dad, said: "The turnout is incredible."

He added the last year had been "tough".

"He has had a lot to deal with, not only has he missed a school year, he has also missed all his friends - the social life.

"Now he is getting that back. It is all looking good now," he added.

The Sir John Sherbrooke Junior School pupil was picked to turn on the lights after his school won a competition.

"When I first knew it'd be me, I was really shocked," Aydn said.

The honour comes after hundreds of people were left disappointed last year when Calverton's Christmas lights switch-on failed due to the lights not being fully installed.
