Charges have increased at a number of council-run car parks in Nottinghamshire.

Broxtowe Borough Council introduced new fares in Beeston, Eastwood, Kimberley and Stapleford on New Year's Day.

Among the changes is the end of one hour of free parking the council has offered since 2010.

The authority said it needed to increase its income to cover the cost of running the 28 car parks it operated.

It now costs £1 to park for two hours, £2 for three hours, £3 for six hours and £15 to stay all day.

'Prevent job cuts'

The council said free parking would remain on Sundays and between 22:00 and 08:00 GMT at all of its car parks.

It also said it would preserve weekend free parking at Devonshire Avenue in Beeston, Oxford Street in Eastwood, Victoria Street in Kimberley and Halls Road in Stapleford.

It currently costs the council £294,000 annually to run and maintain its car parks but they only generate £255,000 from charges.

The council's portfolio holder for resources Greg Marshall said: "We believe that these changes to our car parking charges will allow the council to invest in our facilities and prevent cuts to jobs and services.

"This means we can deliver on our commitments to keep our town centres clean, invest in new facilities like changing places toilets and help in our wider ambition of providing new leisure facilities."
