Motorists have been warned to expect delays on the A52 in Nottingham as work to upgrade two key junctions continues.

The work at Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft roundabouts is part of a wider scheme to improve junctions on the A52.

Lane closures will be in place at the Nottingham Knight from 8 to 23 January and at Wheatcroft from 22 January to 1 February.

All work will be carried out from 20:00 to 06:00 GMT, from Monday to Friday.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "As we progress with our plans to improve Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft junctions, we need to carry out some further ground investigation survey work.

"This is so we can understand the properties of the underlying ground.

"The results from these surveys will feed into our design to ensure optimal improvements are achieved at each junction.

"The survey works in the area that we'll be conducting include boreholes and trial pits."

The A52 improvement scheme was announced in 2014 as part of the government's Road Investment Strategy.

Nottingham Knight roundabout is used by about 64,000 vehicles every day and about 50,000 at Wheatcroft.

But forecasts predict both junctions will be used by 100,000 vehicles a day within 15 years and the work is being carried out to prepare the junctions for higher levels of traffic and to cut queues.

Both roundabouts will increase in size to accommodate more cars as part of the improvement scheme, approach roads will also be widened to add extra lanes, traffic lights will be installed and additional link roads will be added, including "hamburgers" that will allow traffic to travel across the centre of both islands.

National Highways has said the dates and timings of the work might need to be altered due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
