A dog found tied up and abandoned on Christmas Day is looking for a new home after she was rescued.

Bella, a three-year-old Staffordshire Bull terrier, was said to be "extremely skinny" when she was found tied up on a golf course in the Huthwaite area.

The member of the public who found her then called Babbington Hall Kennels and Rescue to collect her.

"To do this on Christmas Day is very unfeeling and cruel," a spokesperson for the kennels said.

"There are many other options before abandoning your dog and leaving it tied up, where it may have not been found for days," the spokesperson added.

"Bella is a typical Staffie and very happy, so did not seem to put out by her experience.

"This may be due to the lack of care given to her in her home and then getting lots of attention from the wardens and staff when found."

Babbington Hall Kennels and Rescue says Bella is doing very well and has placed her up for rehoming in the hope it can "find her forever home".

There are currently six dogs up for adoption at Babbington Hall Kennels and Rescue, a number which was "more than usual", according to the site.

The RSPCA said Babbington's experience was reflected across England and Wales, where the total figure for 2023 of cases for animal abandonment is expected to be far higher than the number of reports received in 2021 (17,179) and 2022 (19,645).
