The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said concerns were raised about staffing levels at the home

A Nottinghamshire care home has been placed in special measures after inspectors rated it inadequate.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said it had serious concerns that elderly residents at Ryland Residential Home, in Beeston, were not being properly cared for and were at risk of harm.

It said the home would be kept under close review after it published its latest inspection report on Friday.

The home has been contacted for comment.

CQC officials carried out the inspection in October after they were informed of concerns about how medicines were managed, staffing levels and safety at the home.

Tripping hazard

Greg Reilly, CQC deputy director of operations in the Midlands, said: "When we inspected Ryland Residential Home, we found a home where leaders didn't have a good understanding of the issues it faced which had resulted in a poor standard of care being provided.

"We found serious concerns regarding people's needs not being met that leaders must urgently address to prevent people from being harmed."

Mr Reilly said it was unacceptable that some residents had been injured in falls because the home was unsafe.

He said unfixed threshold strips in doorways and carpets presented a tripping hazard and when people had falls, staff did not complete the necessary checks or take action to prevent it happening again.

The CQC found some hazardous items, like disinfectant, were accessible to residents and staff had not always properly supported people with mental health problems.

A further inspection is planned and the CQC warned enforcement action could follow if improvements are not made.
