A council is planning to install seven live 4G CCTV cameras to prevent and detect crime in a Nottinghamshire town.

Rushcliffe Borough Council said the project could see cameras installed around Bingham's market place, precinct and town centre car parks.

They would replace existing cameras and be monitored through a CCTV control room.

The council has asked residents to have their say on the plans on its website, external by 29 February.

The authority said the control room would be continuously staffed with direct links to Nottinghamshire Police.

Images would be directly transmitted to police so live incidents could be monitored.

The scheme will be funded by the Home Office's Safer Streets initiative after Nottinghamshire's police and crime commissioner worked with local authorities to secure £333,000 for projects in the south of the county.

Bingham Town Council has also provided funding.

Rob Inglis, portfolio holder for environment and safety at Rushcliffe Borough Council, said: "This will help reduce and deter crime and disorder at the location, support the investigation of crimes and disorder, including environmental crime and anti-social behaviour and ensure the safety of visitors and businesses.

"They can also be rapidly repositioned to respond to changing demands, a model that has worked in other locations in the borough."
