A hospital nurse who helped a patient fulfil his final wish of marrying his partner has received an award for her "outstanding work".

Keela Darby supported Roy Wilkinson while he received end-of-life care at King's Mill Hospital.

Ms Darby and her team arranged the wedding of Mr Wilkinson to his partner Michelle, complete with cake and balloons, at short notice in September.

Mr Wilkinson, who had colon cancer, died just five days later.

Ms Darby arranged balloons, flowers, a cake, cards and champagne for the celebration which "meant so much" to the couple.

Now, she has been honoured for her efforts with a Daisy Award, which recognises the dedication of nurses.

She was nominated by Mr Wilkinson's widow and the couple's daughter, Katherine.

Mrs Wilkinson, who lives in Farndon, Nottinghamshire, said: "They weren't just nurses and doctors; they were friends and people that Roy trusted.

"Keela always made time to sit with Roy and make sure he was as happy and comfortable as possible.

"How they arranged the wedding was so special and amazing."

Ms Darby, who has worked at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for 10 years, was given the award during a surprise presentation attended by colleagues on 5 February.

She said: "A big part of the job is not only looking after the patient but providing any support their family and loved ones need also.

"We wanted Roy's family to know that he wasn't alone when they weren't there and that he was being taken care of.

"I want to thank and recognise the whole team for their part as well - it was a team effort."

Phil Bolton, the trust's chief nurse, said: "I'm so proud of the way our nursing colleagues go the extra mile for patients and their families every day of the week.

"Nursing is not only about providing patients and families with excellence in clinical care but also compassion - it's so much more than just a job.

"Keela's achievement is a great example of what the Daisy Award is all about."
