Severe weather: Power cuts affect hundreds in Oxfordshire

More than 1,000 homes across Oxfordshire lost electricity supplies when gale-force winds and torrential rain hit the region.

Scottish and Southern Energy, external said about 1,400 homes in the Oxford area were without power, with engineers working on Christmas Eve to restore supplies.

High winds brought down dozens of trees blocking a number of roads.

About 60 residents at sheltered accommodation in Bicester were moved out overnight on Monday after flooding.

'Work from home'

Most either went to stay with family or friends, but arrangements had to be made for about 10 who required alternative accommodation.

The county's fire service said it had been called to numerous incidents of flooding from late on Monday, with properties in Bicester, Witney, Stadhampton, Weston-on-the-Green and Deddington affected.

Crews also helped to clear the flooded A417 in Wantage and came to the aid of a motorist who got stuck in waters in Charlbury.

Viv Gaulter-Carter found a tree had blocked her road in Towersey.

She tweeted: "I haven't been able to drive more than a quarter of a mile from home because of being blocked in - flood one end, trees the other.

"The flood may have cleared now though, as people were trying to go through.

"I am having to work from home."

Train operators said they were working hard to get services back to normal, but travellers on Christmas Eve still experienced disruption on some routes.
