Oxford Odeon redevelopment site to create jobs and apprenticeships
- Published
Apprenticeships and jobs at a community space are set to be created as part of plans for a new hotel.
London-based property consultant Marick Real Estate (MRE) has been appointed by Oxford City Council to develop the former Odeon cinema in George Street.
The plans would see an aparthotel run by Dublin-based operator Staycity Group along with a cultural space managed by Makespace Oxford.
Three jobs could support the community hub along with other trainees.
A commitment has also been made to pay staff at the aparthotel the Oxford Living Wage, currently £11.35 per hour.
'Once-in-a-generation'
Director of Makespace Oxford Andy Edwards said MRE would be developing a construction employment plan to accompany the planning application.
This would include construction apprentice opportunities as well as trainee positions at the aparthotel, he added.
"We want to ensure we add to the cultural and community offer in the area, complementing and working with, rather than competing with the vibrant neighbouring market square, Crisis Skylight and the Old Fire Station and the current Fusion Arts led pop-up exhibition space," Mr Edwards said.
Councillor Susan Brown, leader of council, has called it "a once-in-a-generation redevelopment".
"Oxford City Council has been encouraging more hotels to open in Oxford city centre to help boost the local economy," she said.
