A man in his 40s has fallen to his death while working at a construction site.

Police and the ambulance service were called to the Oxford North site just off the A40 near Wolvercote, Oxfordshire, at 10:15 GMT on Monday.

The man had died of his injuries despite the best efforts of medical professionals.

Thames Valley Police said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement, construction company Laing O'Rourke said: "We are shocked and upset by what has happened and have suspended work on the project.

"For now we are focused on doing all we can to support everyone affected by this tragic incident, including the family of the deceased and our project team."

Det Insp Krista Thompson, of Oxford CID, described the death as "tragic" and said the man's next of kin had been made aware.

"We are in the very early stages of this investigation, which we are conducting jointly with the Health & Safety Executive," she added.

Laing O'Rourke said it was cooperating with the investigations.
