A man has been left with serious injuries following a stabbing which led police to close a city road.

Officers were called to Edgecombe Road in Barton, Oxford, just after 23:30 GMT on Thursday.

The man sustained several stab wounds and was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

A 26-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and obstructing/resisting a constable in the execution of their duty.

He remains in police custody.

Bayswater Road has been closed between Edgecombe Road and the Headington roundabout while investigations continue.

Thames Valley Police said there would be an increased police presence over the coming days in the area.

The incident follows a double stabbing in the city which left a man dead.

A murder inquiry was started after the 33-year-old died in hospital on Wednesday following the incident in College Lane, Littlemore, on Sunday evening.

A 28-year-old man was also stabbed during the same altercation. He was later discharged from hospital.

Two men and a woman were arrested and released on bail.

The force said it was not currently linking the two incidents - but added it would "keep an open mind".

Speaking to BBC Radio Oxford, Barton & Sandhills councillor Jabu Nala-Hartley called the events "concerning".

She said: "The first worry is how safe people are in the area... is it now something that's going to be a regular occurrence?"

Ms Nala-Hartley also said she thought not enough was being done to tackle knife crime.

"We are calling for more policing in the area," she added.
