Armed police were sent after reports a man was seen with a gun in Oxford.

Witnesses reported the man in the Manzil Way area of the city at about 14:00 BST.

A 37-year-old was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm and he remains in custody.

One person told the BBC a family member, who works nearby, had called officers "reporting a man with a gun".

Firearms officers from Thames Valley Police attended, along with a police helicopter.

Insp Jamie Cuthbertson said: "I would like to reassure the public that this appears to be an isolated incident.

"We are undertaking a number of enquiries and reassurance patrols, so members of the public will see an increased police presence in the area."

Amendment 12 April: This article was amended to clarify the suspected gunman was seen in the Manzil Way area of Oxford and not specifically near the mosque.
