Notices issued after Telford taxi checks

Nearly half of the taxis stopped during an operation involving police in Shropshire have been issued with improvement notices.

Eighteen out of 40 vehicles stopped were given the notices as part of Operation Clean Sweep tackling anti-social issues in Telford.

The scheme took place in the Ketley Bank and Oakengates areas.

Groups involved included Telford & Wrekin Council, The Wrekin Housing Trust and the fire service.

Insp Jenny Sullivan, from West Mercia Police, said the force had worked closely with the council over taxis and Operation Clean Sweep had been a success.

"It's vital that the public are safe when using taxis in the area," she said.

Asked if anti-social behaviour had been tackled, she added that work had been done with Queenswood Primary School and community support officers had delivered assemblies with the fire service.
