Disabled parking badges in Shropshire could rise to £10

There are plans to increase the cost of a disabled parking badge in Shropshire from £2 to £10, from January.

Telford and Wrekin Council is considering the price rise to fit in with changes being introduced by the Department for Transport.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes said: "These are national government changes to the disabled blue badge scheme that we must adhere to."

Shropshire Council is also considering changes to its blue badge scheme.

National database

Ms Rhodes said the price hike, which would cover the full three years of issue, was due to increased administration costs of the government's plans for 2012.

These include a national database to monitor the system and more rigorous criteria for applying for a blue badge.

Telford and Wrekin Council issued nearly 3,000 disabled parking badges between April 2010 and March 2011.

An average of 5,000 are given out by Shropshire Council each year.
