Neen Sollars flood-damaged bridge could close for three months

Engineers assessing flood damage in a south Shropshire village estimate that a bridge, which partly collapsed, could be closed for three months.

Heavy rain and floodwater hit homes and businesses in Neen Sollars on Saturday.

The River Rea was about 20ft (6m) higher than normal and part of the Grade II listed bridge fell away.

Engineers have yet to fully assess any damage below the waterline, but hope the bridge can soon reopen to pedestrians.

Structural engineer John Williams said: "The flood levels have completely over-topped the bridge, the parapet walls on either side of the road have been washed away.

"Assuming that the bridge foundations are okay, my initial gut instinct is that the bridge is likely to have to remain closed for about three months."

He also said the side walls would need to be rebuilt.
