Shropshire residents rescued from floodwater

A number of people have been rescued from floodwater in south Shropshire following heavy overnight rain.

An 81-year-old woman, who was trapped in her home in Cleobury Mortimer, was taken to safety by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Others were rescued from properties in Ludlow, Minsterley and Neen Sollars where parts of a bridge over the River Rea collapsed.

Flood warnings are set to remain on the River Teme until Sunday.

The Environment Agency (EA) has also issued alerts for the River Severn.

A number of roads were impassable earlier, including the A49 between Craven Arms and Bromfield.

A resident of Neen Sollars, Birgit Jones, said the main road through the village had been damaged by the floodwaters.

"The river rose from what was reasonably normal to up past the telephone box," she said.

"It's receded a little bit but the road is completely impassable because the bridge has gone down the river."
