Prison staff have taken part in a parade to mark the closure of a 136-year-old jail in Shropshire.

HMP Shrewsbury, also known as the Dana, is one of seven prisons closing as part of a reorganisation by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) designed to cut costs.

The last inmates were transferred from the category C prison to other prisons last month.

Staff were parading through the prison gates to mark the closure, due later this month, a spokesman said earlier.

The MoJ has said the reorganisation, which also includes two partial prison closures, would save £63m a year in running costs.

The prisons are due to be replaced by a 2,000-capacity super prison along with four smaller ones, each holding about 400 inmates.
