Telford and Wrekin bin collections change to save money

About 40,000 households in Shropshire are to have their rubbish collected on different days as part of council budget cuts.

Telford and Wrekin Council is cutting the number of refuse vehicles it uses from six to five.

The council said it has been able to make the cuts by redesigning 12-year-old collection routes which were not "the most efficient".

Three staff from the sixth lorry would be redeployed, a spokesman said.

The council said the new routes would cut the distance refuse vehicles travel and reduce the council's spending on fuel.

The changes will save "several million pounds in the medium term", the council said.

The Labour-run council is trying to make £50m of savings as a result of funding cuts.

The council will send out letters and attach messages to bins in early June with details of the new collection dates.

No households will lose a collection, the spokesman added.
