More flood barriers to be erected in Shrewsbury

More flood defences are being erected in Shrewsbury, the Environment Agency has said, external.

Barriers have gone up at Coleham Head, as the river reached its "trigger" level.

Shropshire Council, which has already closed , external several roads and two car parks in Shrewsbury, warned motorists to expect further disruption.

Defences have also been erected in Bridgnorth after the River Severn hit record levels.

Forecasters are predicting more rain will hit the county, with 14 flood warnings, external currently in place.

Shropshire Council's environmental maintenance manager Tim Sneddon told the BBC the Severn was expected to peak at 4.6m (15ft) at about 19:00 GMT.

He said he expected more roads would be closed but did not think it would be necessary to evacuate any properties "at the moment".

A number of roads across Shropshire remain closed, as well as the Frankwell car parks in Shrewsbury. There are also reports, external of snow in Church Stretton.

Morgan Wray, from the Environment Agency, told BBC Radio Shropshire the barriers could remain "into next week".
