Telford Town Park voted best in the UK thanks to its water play and high ropes course

Telford Town Park has been named the best park in the UK following a public vote.

The awards were organised by The Fields in Trust - a nationwide charity which safeguards recreational spaces.

The charity nominated 122 parks across the UK for the award, and 8,000 public votes were cast.

Liz Clare, Telford's cabinet member for leisure services and culture, said the park has always been one of the jewels in the town's crown.

She said: "We're obviously delighted that our beautiful park has won such a prestigious national award in spite of extremely stiff competition.

"But I have to say I am not the least bit surprised - I've always said our Town Park is one of the jewels in Telford's crown and it is great to have it confirmed on a national stage."

The park is owned by Telford & Wrekin Council and was nominated for the award by a member of the Friends of Telford Town Park, a group which started in 2003 to help give the park extra care and attention.

They said the park had a number of attractions including:

• A water play

• High ropes course

• Adventure golf

• Sensory garden

Also shortlisted for the award were parks in Aberdeen and Gheluvelt Park in Worcester.
